Zambia has obvious monsoon and dry season which has a great influence on tourism in terms of game viewing and other adventure activities.
The dry seasons are from the month of April through to October and the monsoon from November through to March. Game viewing can be challenging in the Months of April through to early June as the grass is still long and the trees in leaf neither of which is ideal for walking.
From June through to October the conditions are better as foliage has dried, the grass has withered and animals are depending on permanent water sources.
The month of November brings the Monsoon season, with storms. Though game viewing can be still be good the conditions can change quickly
As nature is unpredictable sometimes the rains start early sometimes they don’t. it is a difficult time to visit as it is a matter of lucky to catch open lodges as most would have closed for the monsoon season, The roads become impassible as self drive becomes dangerous, fly in are your better option.
During this period the temperatures remain hot and the rains brings a sense of relief monsoon is finally here and with that baby animals begin to Arrive. The migration of wild beasts continue at Liuwa National Park and bat migration in the Kasanka National Park sees millions upon un counted millions of birds flying in the skies to pastures new, make sure you visit with a guide as it is safer to do so.
White water rafting is all good in the month of November; you can as well experience the magic of the Devils Pool and do guided walks around in the Victoria Falls.
The arrival of the month of December, Zambia will still be in the middle of the monsoon season (rain season). There will be down pours despite the heat and this now is the time when lodges and camps without fly in access will close for the season.
There are a few safari opportunities available, Rafting will still be available on the Zambezi but only half day rafting yet one thing is certain the rain season attracts birds and we begin to see mammals with their new born babies.
The Devils pool is still open though. The year has done its circle we are again starting in January
In January as many traveler would want go on a land safari, the rains are at the pick lodges and camp sites are closed in many places and it is just challenging to get around during this month, you however can get yourself a boat safari in the Mosi Oa Tunya national park and also Luangwa National Park. The Luangwa River allows you to explore as the water raises high enough to allow access to the woodland groves.
When it comes to wildlife though sightseeing generally becomes challenging, it’s the best time to see baby animals learning the ways of the jungle as mammals give birth from December to march.
Following the path ways of January, February brings with it more storms, pathways washed away, so as suggested for January you can enjoy boat safaris in the musi ao tunya and Luangwa National Park.
Bringing the end of the rainy season the of March will still experience a few rains here and there. Water levels are at the highest in this part of the year. Unfortunately you will not be able to drive deep into the parks as the pathways would be difficult. Bird watching is still a better option during this time of the year and also bat safari.
Victoria Falls is not that adventurous as you will not be allowed to go beyond certain points. You would get very wet because of the water levels yet if you don’t want to get wet you can do Helicopter flight on top of the falls with spectacular views
